Turkish President Abdullah Gül on Wednesday attended an inauguration ceremony for Turkey’s first-ever aviation university wearing a flight jacket and inspected several domestically produced aircraft.
The new campus of the Ankara-based Turkish Aviation Board (THK) University, Turkey’s first aviation and space sciences university, was officially opened in a ceremony held on Wednesday, Cihan news agency reported.
Speaking during the ceremony, Gül said he expects Turkey to make great strides in the field of aviation with the opening of THK University.
“Scientists, engineers and people who will be able to cooperate with the world’s best universities and enterprises will be educated here,” Gül said. Recalling that the Turkish Land Forces are among the state institutions that will be providing support for the university, Gül said the state will continue assisting the school.
After his speech, Gül donned a flight jacket presented to him as a gift and toured the aerodrome located on campus. He also sat in the pilot seat of a firefighting aircraft named after him and gave the crowd a thumbs-up from the cockpit.
