International conference on Somalia in Turkey: A rare hope for Somalia.

With the international conference on Somalia concluded in Istanbul, Turkey, Somalis sense a kind of different hope this time as Turkey is more involved in Somalia and is already investing the country and helping rebuild much needed infrastructures in the country.

The Istanbul conference attended by more than 54 countries and Somalia’s different political parts including the TFG, the conference was a back up for the London conference which took place on the 23rd February this year and it is more a practical one as one can say.

Some of the decisions reached in the conference are vital for the recovery and revival of Somalia’s economic infrastructures and the reconstruction of the country.

Somalis have had endless conferences with no results but the Istanbul one seems to the Somali people much more different from its predecessors as Turkey is already involved in helping and supporting Somalia in different aspects such as, scholarships to thousands of Somali students, training the Somali police, helping the displaced and drought effected Somalis with food, shelter, medicine and clean water.

Why the Istanbul conference is so different from the previous ones are, 1. The international community is now serious in helping Somalia.

2. Turkey, a member of the world’s most powerful organization, NATO, is committed in helping Somalia with needed projects and promised to help implement the outcome of the Istanbul conference.

3. Somalis are now ready to have an efficient national government that can govern the whole country.

4. Somali traditional elders, scholars and diaspora have for the first time been given a full participation in the country’s decision making  conferences.

5. Neighboring countries are now also ready Somalia to have a government that can guard its borders so that they, the neighboring countries are not infiltrated by Al-Qaeda and Al-shabab militants.

So, with all these chances available, the Istanbul conference outcome is likely to be implemented in Somalia and Somalia will again come back to the international scenes this time but not with endless conferences but with the result of the London, Istanbul and other conferences held to support the country.

Somalia’s capital, Mogadisho is already under huge renovation and reconstruction.

New buildings are being constructed in the capital and old ones are being rebuilt as people are making use of the relative peace in the capital after the ouster of Alshabab from the city. Many Somalis in the diaspora are coming back to the country with cash and development plans.

What is more important is to help Somalis in implementing the outcome of the Istanbul conference otherwise, the result will be  one of no importance to the Somali people and country, and the international community can play an important role in the implementation of the Istanbul conference, but at the end of the day, it is the Somalis that are required in reconstructing their country.

The conference was a rare hope for Somalia’s future as the world seems to be united in the cause of Somalia.
